Andrew Carvel

Composer - Teacher - Conductor

After spending the first 18 years of his life going between music lessons, orchestra rehearsals and spending hours working out new music at the piano; Andrew couldn’t imagine a life without being immersed in music. He studied Composition with Ken Dempster and Saxophone with Sue McKenzie at Edinburgh Napier University and graduated in 2011 with First Class Honours in Music.

Since graduating Andrew has been in demand as a composer and arranger and has worked on projects across numerous musical genres including writing multi movement works for choir and ensemble, collaborating to write a new musical, and various commissions of choral introits and anthems that have been recorded by various choirs in the UK and abroad. Andrew has always had a passion for choral music and is the Assistant Director of Music at St. Andrew’s and St. George’s West Church, as well as being the associate conductor of the community choir ‘Gaudete. He is also a lay clerk in the professional Robin Chapel Choir, a member of the SCO chorus, and a founding member of the a cappella group Vintage Twelve.

In addition to composing, conducting, and performing, Andrew has a busy teaching schedule. He is the Music Specialist at Early Days Nursery, teaches recorder musicianship, and chamber music at Edinburgh Young Musicians, as well as teaching piano, recorder, clarinet, and saxophone privately.

Andrew recently completed the Composition MMus programme at the University of Edinburgh with Peter Nelson and is enjoying taking on new composition projects. Recent works include commissions for the 50th anniversary of the Scottish Chamber Choir and the 21st birthday concert for Edinburgh Young Musicians.
